Swengali: Are You Feeling Lucky, Wizards?

It’s time for the Washington Wizards to play their version of limbo once again. How low can they go?
Yep, Tuesday night’s NBA draft lottery marks one of the most important moments in the rebuilding of the franchise.
A new owner, Ted Leonsis, is almost in place. One will assume there will be some significant shifts in the way the team does business. But the pressing matter is if the team’s luck will change.
Since the rest of this column will deal in hypotheticals, let’s quickly return to our original question.
The worst that the Wizards can do is fall to eighth. There’s a better than 50 percent chance that they will end up with the fifth or sixth pick, which is where they belong if you go by regular season records.
Everything that could go wrong did last year. If there’s a higher power looking to extend a favor, it may want to look to the Wizards’ way.
How important is this pick? Say Washington wins the lottery, Kentucky point guard John Wall will probably become the new face of the franchise. It also makes it a whole lot easier to cut the cord with Gilbert Arenas.
A few spots later, Kentucky big man DeMarcus Cousins will be an option. Further down the list is Georgetown forward Greg Monroe.
Whether they go big or small, the Wizards’ fate will be decided Tuesday. Just don’t get your hopes up.
