Today's Top Stop: On the Waterfront

Map It:  Dupont Circle

Courtesy Phillips CollectionNOW THAT THE ORIGINAL "Luncheon of the Boating Party" has returned home to the Phillips Collection, fans of Pierre-Auguste Renoir's Impressionist masterpiece can contemplate it in person and ask themselves, "Who is my favorite character?" Is it the sketchy, bearded guy in the tight-fitting tank top? Is it that chick in the flowered hat who looks ready to make out with her dog? (There is an awful lot of wine on the table.) Or is it the obviously hammered lady in blue ogling the guy next to her? (There is an awful lot ... oh, never mind.) So many 19th-century upper-class portrayals to choose from!

You'll get a chance to see these creatures come alive at the Phillips' fun/horrifying event, "From Cafe to Cabaret -- Paris by Night. People dressed as Renoir's characters will roam the galleries, freaking out/delighting museum-goers. There will also be music and performances meant to evoke Paris-of-the-past. Ask before getting too close to the dog, first, though.
The Phillips Collection, 1600 21st St. NW; 6 p.m.-8 p.m.; $10-$12 (Dupont Circle)

  • Wow, will there really be a hunky bearded guy in a tight tank-top? I am so there.
