Window Shopper: From Tang to Tank

Be proud of your scummy tank. ALGAE LOVE: In terms of fish tanks, the conventional wisdom on algae is that it's generally not a good thing. That's why people buy magnet pads to scrub it off, chemicals to kill it and other freakishly ugly fish to suck it off the glass. But this seller in Hanover, Md., is fighting our algae preconceptions, claiming that squishy "large as far as algae goes" clumps actually make your tank healthier. Read the pitch; if you're interested after that, you've got an entire algae smorgasbord to select from, ranging from some that appear to have "little mini grapes growing on them" to some that "look like spaghetti noodles" to some "Tang Heaven." Doesn't explain the algae, but it sure seems to explain Tang.
