Near U St., Illegal Dumping of a Different Kind
EARLIER THIS WEEK, we told you about how the D.C. Department of Public Works has an illegal dumping investigative team that sifts through garbage and monitors hot dumping sites to catch the culprits.
Now, in the vicinity of U Street NW, there's some illegal dumping of a different kind, as reported on the neighborhood Yahoo Group message board. First, in the alleyway between T Street NW and Wallach Place, between 13th and 14th streets, there's a report from Wednesday of "3 teenage boys on bikes upending trash cans from one end of the block to the other" who later were spotted hanging out at the 7-11 at 12th and U streets NW, which, coincidentally, is a hangout for local cops, too. Nevertheless, "[r]esidents were stuck cleaning up the mess," reports Carolee Inskeep.
Nearby, in the alley between 13th Street NW and 12th Place south of Florida Avenue, there's a report from Thursday of garbage being strewn about. The culprits? City crews, neighbors say, who have been pushing over garbage cans "in the efforts to remove the recycling containers." And that's creating a big mess. Neighbor Mike Oliveira writes that "city officials should wake up early on one of the pick up days and see first hand what occurs."
