Styles: Fairy Godproduct
ONCE THERE WAS a reporter whose hair looked and felt like a cheap wig extracted from a hay bale. Sometimes it knotted so badly, a pair of blunt scissors were required to untangle it. She put every kind of gack on it, from mud to carrot juice-enhanced spackle to straight-up toxic waste. She had lost all faith in anything called a "hair mask."
But then Kiehl's Lecithin and Coconut Enriched Hair Masque with Panthenol for Dry Hair ($24, kiehls.com) suddenly appeared. She was shocked to discover that her hair had transformed from straw into soft, unfrizzy gold. It held for about a week — she almost didn't even need to use conditioner — before another treatment was needed. The end.
» FAST WITH NO FURY: Here's another thing we've lost faith in: Quick-dry nail polish. It either doesn't dry in a minute, or it turns into sticky goo when the next coat goes on. Yet, like a dog loyal to an unkind master, we always come crawling back, buying whatever new fast-acting lacquer CVS coughs up. This time it was Rimmel's 60 Seconds Vinyl Shine ($1.24, drugstores). We put it on our toes, hating ourselves for our gullibility. And it dried faster than a drop of water on a smoking griddle. The second coat went on smoothly and was ready equally fast. The deep, iridescent purple shade (dubbed "Zenith") wasn't bad either, and it's still hanging on after about a week of wear.
