The Morning News: July 18, 2007

GOOD MORNING, WASHINGTON. The light in the Capitol's cupola was on overnight, and it still burned brightly as the sun rose this morning. Why? The Senate was in session for an all-night debate on the Iraq war, though Democrats and Republicans admitted that staying awake until breakfast wouldn't resolve their differences.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., ordered cots to be rolled out and pizzas to be delivered. As The Post's Shailagh Murray and Paul Kane report, "Senators were warned that votes could occur anytime throughout the night."

Where did those cots come from? As The Post's Sridhar Pappu writes in a history of cots in the Capitol, nine were trucked in from Cheverly and a "dozen or so beds reside with the Senate sergeant at arms, who stores them for such occasions."
