Pr. George's Wants Nonexistent Rail Line Expanded
OFFICIALS IN PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY apparently see a future in which a super city rises from the fields of Westphalia near Andrews Air Force Base — and they want the Green Line to go there.
Considering all the trouble Virginia's been having with the proposed rail extension to Dulles Airport, we assume there won't be much movement on that for decades. But a county's got to dream.
Now, according to the Examiner, county officials are looking to expand the Purple Line to Largo and beyond. But as the newspaper notes, that transit link doesn’t even exist yet. Talk about getting your requests in early.
The Prince George's County Council OK'd a letter to Gov. Martin O'Malley asking his administration to look at the possibility of extending the Purple Line past its planned terminus at New Carrollton to points including FedEx Field and Prince George's County Community College. Additionally, the letter asks officials to look at other options for the line's route, including an alignment that would head toward the Woodrow Wilson Bridge via Andrews Air Force Base and National Harbor.
Big plans indeed, but we fear that in this age of tight budgets, it'll be a long time before such a proposal becomes a reality, just like a future crosstown M Street subway in the District.
