Arlington OKs Plan for Tower at Rosslyn Station

Map courtesy WMATAAT ITS MEETING last week, Metro's Board of Directors approved spending $450,000 to study an expansion of the Rosslyn Metrorail station that would include three high-speed elevators to the surface. Then, over the weekend, the Arlington County Board approved a site plan for the region's tallest building, which will tie into the expanded transit access.

The proposed building, to be known as 1812 N. Moore St., will also include a deal to redevelop the 54,000-square-foot former Newseum complex at 1101 Wilson Blvd., which the county will be able to use rent-free for 10 years as a cultural space under a special agreement with the developer, Monday Properties, which owns a number of buildings in Rosslyn. A formal lease agreement is expected in 2008.

The 1812 N. Moore St. building, adjacent to the Rosslyn station, will be Arlington's first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design building with Platinum certification, which mandates the following, according to the county:

» 35 percent of energy from renewable sources
» 24.5 percent reduced energy consumption
» 42 percent more efficient water fixtures and plumbing system
» 75 percent recycled construction waste
» 30 percent recycled materials used in new construction
» 40 percent local materials used in new construction
» 75 percent of regularly occupied spaces having abundant natural light
» 90 percent of regularly occupied spaces having direct line of sight to outdoor environment
As for the transit component, the high-speed elevators will service the building's lobby and there will be new bus shelters, along with space for the Rosslyn Transit Store.
