Road, Parking Restrictions Set for Pope's Visit
THE TRAVELS of Pope Benedict XIV will be exciting for local Catholics and celebrity-watchers, but not necessarily so swell for local traffic.
According to a news release from the D.C. Department of Transportation, changes put in place for the pope's travels will include the closure of the Frederick Douglass Bridge on Thursday and parking restrictions on parts of Massachusetts Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue in Northwest.
DDOT's full list of closures follows below.
Wednesday, April 16th
3 p.m. - 8 p.m. -- Michigan Avenue NE from Monroe Street to Irving Street
3 p.m. - 8 p.m. -- 4th Street, NE north of Lincoln Road
3 p.m. - 8 p.m. -- Harewood Road NE from Taylor Street to Michigan Avenue
Thursday, April 17th
2 a.m. - 2 p.m. South Capitol Street SE from I Street to Potomac Avenue over the
Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge to Firth Sterling Avenue
10 a.m. - 8 p.m. -- Harewood Road NE from Taylor Street to Michigan Avenue
4 p.m. - 6 p.m. -- Michigan Avenue NE from Monroe Street to Irving Street
4 p.m. - 6 p.m. -- McCormick Avenue NE from Taylor Street to Michigan Avenue
3 p.m. - 8 p.m. -- North Capitol Street will remain open to cars only. No truck
traffic will be allowed from Taylor Street to Michigan Avenue
In addition to the above closures, the following restrictions will be in effect:
8 p.m. Monday, April 14 through 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 16
» No parking on Pennsylvania Avenue between 17th and 26th Streets, NW
» No parking on Massachusetts Avenue from Waterside Drive to 34th Street
5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15 through 9 a.m. Friday, April 18
» No truck traffic will be allowed on Massachusetts Avenue from Wisconsin Avenue to Observatory Circle
» Massachusetts Avenue from Observatory Circle to 34th Street will be one lane in each direction
