Idol Chatter: Syesha Mercado, 'Idol's' Soulful Survivor

THIS MIGHT be Syesha Mercado's last week on "American Idol." And she should be ecstatic about that.

Not because she'll be leaving the hit show -- that's a tough break in any case. But because she outlasted, outperformed and outsang all of the female competitors and all but three of the wildly popular men in this season's formidable lineup.

And she's had to fight for her survival each step of the way, landing near the bottom of the contestant pack a record-tying five times at least without losing her spot in the mix.

The secret to her success? It's tough to say, since the "Idol" audience can be as unpredictable as a Gulf Coast hurricane, but her continued improvement onstage is surely a factor. She dazzled during Andrew Lloyd Webber week and showed off an impressive range with the songs of Neil Diamond.

Could Syesha displace a flailing Jason Castro on Wednesday and live to fight another week? You'd think not. But it seems this underdog has an unending supply of new tricks.

» COMING UP: Tonight, the "Idol" contestants perform songs that shaped and inspired rock 'n' roll. I'll have a recap on Wednesday morning, a live chat Wednesday at 11 a.m., then a wrap of Wednesday night's eliminations on Thursday morning. It's all here at readexpress.com/idol.

Until then, what do you think about Syesha's chances of surviving the week? Can Jason Castro hang on? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

  • It's entirely possible that Jason could go. Syesha will have to really pull it out to stay another week. The problem is that she IS good, just lacking a bit in performance (up until a couple of weeks ago). I think unfortunately for her, it depends more on how Jason does. If he can wow the audience as he had done in the past, she's out (no matter how good she does)

  • It's interesting to see what will happen tonight. I'm not sure if she can survive against three guys with ENORMOUS fanbases, no matter how great she is. But then, she does have a genre all to herself, so maybe she could get the R&B-lovers vote. And she's been able to hang in there every week. Obviously, Jason is the one she has the best chance of catching, but his fans are crazy-motivated, so we'll see.

  • Thanks for propping up Syesha in your preview. I wish your column had nationwide exposure to give her momentum going into tonight. (I bet you TOO wish your column had nationwide exposure -- regardless of topic!!) Maybe she gets the majority of the female vote, the R&B vote, and the underdog vote! Who knows? My vote is for a David C / Syesha final. However, let's say my girl hits one out of the park, I still predict that Simon will find a way to ding her! ("That was very good, but here's the problem Syesha, etc . . . .") Watch and see.

  • I don't think Syesha will be gone this week. She has really turned it around on Idol and I for one believe she deserves to be in the final 3. Jason is incredibly talented not to mention cute. That being said he has really struggled lately. I think maybe it should be his time to go. LET'S GO SYESHA!!

  • Julie - I agree wholeheartedly with your 12:28 re: Syesha!! Great minds think alike! However, I don't see "incredibly" (talented) and "Jason" in the same sentence, just like I don't see "performance" and David A in the same sentence.

But as for Jason, I don't "not like him" for his voice; it's for his admitted ignorance of music history, appreciation, (the mentors, etc.) and, I suspect, the music business in general. That (and his vacuous vocabulary and personality!!) is far and away the reason that I could never endorse him. In short, he is not worthy of the title. He is simply a switch that turns on and off to sing songs, with little or no regard for the context or backstory. (I still can't believe he admitted to not knowing "Cats!" was performed by, um, cats!) What a doofus! As for whether he is cute or not, I'll leave that to the ladies to discern. But "cute" shouldn't be one of the stronger voting parameters in a singing contest. I've also had it with his one-style coffehouse fashion (faded jeans)and presentation. Please, people! No votes for Jason tonight.

  • This is a shout-out from...Dallas, TX! Greg, yours are the only AI articles I read; I tried one other, and it was BORING... I am always relating what I read in your articles to my husband. We're usually laughing at a joke or pun you've made. I too hope Syesha beats out Jason tonight. I won't hold my breath, but it would be awesome!

  • Greg...Congrats. If Rebecca is posting from Dallas then you are almost nation wide. I have been to Dallas a few times. Great city...except for those Cowboys :)
Jason is the one to go unless we get another shocker. Does the bell toll for a 'David'? Unlikely but...who knows

  • Hey, Greg your shout-out from Rebecca proves... Nationwide done.

  • Syesha would not leave this nigh, Jason, David A might be a shocking elimination because there fans might relax thinking Syesha would be booted

    By toyin , Posted May 6, 2008 4:26 PM
  • Wow. I'm nationwide. Does that mean I'm bad, too?

» virginia: Yeah, I think Syesha's fate is definitely intertwined with Jason's. What she really needs is for him to do passibly well. If he's great, folks will vote in droves. If he's awful, they'll vote in droves, too, to keep him on.

Problem is, we might have reached the point in the season when the show is a pure popularity contest. Which throws almost all logic out the window. But I guess we're used to that here in D.C.

» EOC: It will be a very eeeeeeeenteresting week, that's for sure. Jason's fans are young and strong, but even they (the rational ones, anyway) would have to admit he's hit a bit of a dry spell.

» RedRocket: How'd I know you'd comment on this post? Syesha has surely earned her place in the Top 4, and I think it'd be great to see her make the Top 3. I just don't know if that's going to happen given how popular these three guys are. And I still think Archuleta's a lock for the finals. (And if anybody'd like to help give this column nationwide exposure, be my guest. For example, I don't think Television Without Pity even knows we exist.)

» Julie: I totally agree. I hope talent will win out this week.

» Rebecca: Thanks for the Texas-sized compliments. If you like it, be sure to tell a friend. The bean-counters pay verrrrrrrrrry close attention to how many people read these li'l things.

» Sheriff: I'm not so sure Jason's on the outs, but I hope he is. And we've reached the stage when a David could indeed get dropped. I don't think I'll happen, but I've been surprised before...

» toyin: David A. would indeed be a shocking choice. But I really doubt he'll get nuked before the final episode. His fans are too young, too text-savvy and too rabid.
