Idol Chatter: Syesha's Relief
Express' Greg Barber recaps the ousting of Syesha Mercado on "American Idol."

EVEN THOUGH the contestants won't be competing, it's clear from the buzz in the air and the clamor in the audience that this "American Idol" results broadcast will be more action-packed than most.
The show starts with a whip around the audience, and, oh, the "Idol" luminaries we see! Ex-contestants Michael Johns, Brooke White, Kristy Lee Cook and Ramiele Malubay! And former mentor Andrew Lloyd Webber!
And then it's cleavage-o-rama as the judges are introduced. Paula's girls are out for a night on the town — and don't get me started about the anatomical weirdness that her necklace engenders. Yikes.
And then there's Simon, who looks like he mugged a maitre d' on his way in, stole his shirt, then ripped off the top buttons. His outfit shows off much more of his chestal area than I would ever really want to see.
For the group sing, three very lonely looking Idolites — David Archuleta, David Cook and Syesha Mercado — strut out to sing the ironically titled "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now." Which is funny, of course, since one of them will be stopped dead in their tracks tonight.
Hey, more former Idolites! Jason Castro! Amanda Overmyer and her hair! Chikezie! David Hernandez! It's strange how long it seems since we've seen some of them, doesn't it?
FUTURE TENSE
It's the, *sigh*, Ford entertainmercial! These never get old!
The song: "Heaven" by Los Lonely Boys. The plot: The Idolites stop by a mechanical fortune-teller, who, um, tells them ... their ... fortunes. Well, it's true. (Watch here.)
Syesha is a rich girl, but she's gone too far and she knows it don't matter anyway. Li'l David apparently morphs into a pint-sized Liberace, but without the bling. And David Cook owns a mansion with a front yard full of Fords. And then they walk outside the fortune-telling tent to discover they actually all have Fords! Yay! Fords!
Not revealed: Which one, y'know, wins the show. Minor detail. But if I was an "American Idol" contestant at this stage of the game, that might be the first question I'd ask.
FANTASY LAND
Here's a fun stat, by way of Seacrest: 56 million votes were cast Tuesday night. Something tells me some teenagers' phones nearly burst into flame from over-texting.
We can't get to the results just yet, so it's off to a confirmed "Idol" winner: Fantasia, who sings her song, "Bore Me." (Watch here.)
And she's certainly not boring. She's, um, definitely athletic. Her back-up dancers certainly get a workout. And the song is very peppy.
I really want to like Fantasia. I didn't watch her season of "Idol," but I remember the ferocious fan base she attracted and I was kind of excited to see what all the fuss was about.
This performance, though? It was a seizure set to music. The dumbfounded expression on Simon's face reflected the one on my mug as well. For me, her time on stage was three minutes of what-the-heck-was-that confusion. If the Tasmanian Devil put out a record, that's what it would sound like.
Come and get me, Fantasia fans. I've got two recaps left. Make 'em count.
UTAH STATE OF MIND
It's elimination time, and Li'l David's the first out. It must be nerve-wracking. But nowhere near as strange as his trip home.
It's one. Long. Scream. Everywhere that kid goes, it seems, there are high-pitched wails. Every dog in Murray, Utah, must've been apoplectic for the duration of David's trip. (Watch here.)
How does all that adulation affect a 17-year-old? In David's case, it brings out some tears during a trip to his hometown shopping mall. "I can't believe how many people came out for this," a visibly emotional David says. "I just can't thank them enough. It means — it makes it all worth it knowing how many people appreciate this, all the hard work I've been doing for this."
Uh. Yeah. 'Kay.
The funnier moment: In the limo after the event. "I can't believe how many people came out," David says. "Oh, gosh, where did they park?"
And then, he goes back to his high school, where there are banners and balloons and everyone cheers for him. It's an experience we can all relate to, of course, right? Everyone in your high school cheering you? Embracing you? Telling you how wonderful you are? How unique we all are as people? How each of us should be celebrated for the gifts we bring to the table? How everyone's special? How everyone touches each other's lives in small yet ultimately meaningful ways? Didn't we all feel that loved and appreciated as teenagers?
Yeah, me neither. But the ones who did usually look like hell at the reunions.
We're back on stage with Li'l David, who's given no clue by Seacrest as to whether he'll stay or go — but he gets to sit through his videotaped show obituary anyway, as I'm guessing all of the Top 3 will have to tonight.
HEAD OVER HEELS
Syesha's out next, and we get to see her triumphant trip back to her hometown of Sarasota, Fla. She's on TV. She's cheered by crowds. She has a baby thrust into her hands? Woah. (Watch here.)
She's feted by local officials. And she, too, cries. And then she pulls up to her house in a limo, which has to be a mighty fine feeling.
Her mom seems totally overwhelmed as they drive down the street in a parade for Syesha. She's cute.
Sarasota Mayor Lou Ann Palmer starts out cute, too. "We've been turning inside out and upside down for Syesha!" she declares haltingly. Then, she does a handstand. Which I can't say I've seen a woman of her advanced age do before. "Oh, my God," Syesha says. My thoughts exactly.
Back on stage with Syesha, Seacrest asks whether she thinks Paula was too hard on her after her performances on Tuesday.
"Yep," Simon says, unprompted.
"Um, no. I don't know; everybody has their opinions, though," Syesha says. "I wouldn't say that."
Then, it's obit time for Syesha, too. Those must be strange for the contestants to watch. Especially since they're not quite dead yet.
MR. MISSOURI
Now, it's David Cook's turn. He and Seacrest talk about how it wasn't his idea to audition for "Idol" — he actually went to the auditions to support his brother, Andrew. But then ended up auditioning. And getting a golden ticket. And going to Hollywood. And ending up a finalist.
Andrew joins him on stage, so apparently they're still speaking. Andrew should expect some kick-ass presents every birthday and Christmas for quite some time, I hope.
David heads back to his hometown of Kansas City, Mo., where he's breathlessly anticipated by the news team at his local Fox station. Then, he's on the radio. Then, he's playing for a massive crowd in downtown Kansas City, all the while traveling by police motorcade.
As he signs an autograph, he gets his own version of Crying Sanjaya Girl, which must be a strange experience indeed.
And then — totally cute — he gives his elementary school music teacher flowers. And then, there's the requisite parade. And, yep, David cries, too. Three for three.
"This is a trip," he says. "I can't process it."

THREE NO MORE
As the show returns from commercials with all three of them standing on stage and clasping hands, you can almost sense their anxiety. It could be anybody's win, anybody's loss.
David Archuleta has a thriving fan base and angelic pipes. David Cook is the creative maestro whose arranging finesse wowed critics and earned supporters in droves. And Syesha Mercado is the scrappy songstress who fought her way from perennial last-place to the Top 3.
Seacrest tosses to the judges.
» Randy: You guys did an amazing job. You should be well proud of yourself. You came through of a 100,000 people we saw and the three still standing there. So hot, so amazing. Give yourself a big round of applause no matter what happens.
» Paula: Life's about moments. And if you're lucky enough, you create ones that will last forever. ... And if you're really, really lucky, the world will watch. And the world's gonna remember every single one of you.
» Simon: I like these three. And I think, if it's the final I'm hoping for, we're going to have a real hum-dinger next week.
And now it's time. The crowd screeches and natters, then grows deathly still. (Watch here.)
Li'l David is in. (Cut to Daddy Archuleta cheering.)
And his opponent? David Cook.
It's David versus David, ladies and gents. And that will indeed be a hum-dinger.
And it's a night that caps an incredible run for Syesha Mercado.
It was almost inevitable. The Davids have stood atop the heap throughout the competition, earning critical acclaim and prompting screams and cheers with each appearance. Syesha's a wonderful singer — and one who improved and matured as the show progressed, but she couldn't crack into their level of popularity or, to be honest, talent.
I'm confident she'll go on to a solid career, possibly on Broadway. You'll see her on a marquee or in a Playbill in the years to come. But David Cook and David Archuleta, it seems, were almost destined to go head to head in this competition. And, my friends, this will be a finale that's surely worth watching.

» NEXT WEEK: The final week of "American Idol" will be a flurry of activity here in Idol Chatter land. I'll have a preview on Tuesday, which, as usual, will also be in your Express print editions. Wednesday brings our final Idol Chatter Live chat at 11 a.m. and a recap of Tuesday night's performance show. Then our final recap of the season will follow the two-hour, star-studded, fathers-lock-up-your-daughters "Idol" finale. We'll be burning up your ISDNs, T-3s and coaxials right here at readexpress.com/idol.
Between then and now, let's talk. Did Syesha get shafted? And which David do you think will reign supreme? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

Greg, I had basically the same thought about Paula's fashion accessories. A round of applause for Syesha. She out-sang, out-performed and nearly out-lasted the competition (sorry, maybe I watch too much TV). My pick to win now would be David :)(multiple choice). Preference - David C
By Sheriff , Posted May 15, 2008 7:51 AMNo surprises tonight. Syesha should be very proud of how she did and what she accomplished, but it was always gonna be a D2 finale. You'll note that she didn't even cry when she got the news.
OK, Fantasia. I wasn't a huge fan of hers, although I thought she was talented. Sort of like I know that olives appeal to a lot of people, but just not to me. And she was VERY polarizing. Had lots of fans, but lots of people who hated her with the fiery passion of a billion suns. (She was the...Hillary Clinton of her season, except for the part where she won.) Anyway, her performance last night was 1,000 times weirder than any on her season. Simon was a big supporter in Season 3, so the (hilarious) look on his face kind of explains it all.
By EOC , Posted May 15, 2008 8:19 AMYes, Syesha got shafted. Her intro performances (after losing her voice) showed us her tremendous range and control. I suspect being the only Black person after Chekezie had to be debilitating. Still, she pulled some pretty spectacular numbers. Never could the same be said for the David's . After the crooning the "white" bedazzle took over.
By Wanda , Posted May 15, 2008 8:51 AMI missed most of the show cause I was out doing a last minute errand and I figured I wouldn't be missing anything great in the beginning of the show anyways. I came in at the best part anyways--David C.'s trip home. I am curious now to see the tazmanian devil performance and the hand standing mayor. I am sad that Syesha left. It pretty much seals the deal now that David A. is going to win the whole thing. I'm majorly disappointed...
By Lisa , Posted May 15, 2008 9:17 AMGood recap, Greg. I also did not like Fantasia's performance at ALL. I thought it was terrible I know she can do much more with herself than that. Sad that she didn't.
By Virgini , Posted May 15, 2008 9:30 AMNo surprise really that it's the 2 Davids left. I guess the surprise would have been if it wasn't the 2 Davids.
Ok, at the end....Syesha's song......at the very end of her song, last note....did it look to anyone else that it was LIP SYNCHED????
Yes, I beleive Syesha was shafted, but hey she could be the next Platinum Artist though and do better than one of the Davids.
By AJ , Posted May 15, 2008 10:24 AMAnd so, Syesha, your fun run ends
Your name I so tried to defend
I saw in you much more than most
But now your Idol time is toast
We pledge our vote to David C
He seems so Idol-like to me
Not like the other Smiley guy
Who, I hope, next week flies
Syesha, the bloggers, they think I dote
“You two should marry” one even wrote
Not really my plan, I’m married, you see
I only wanted Simon to treat you fairly
Ironic, no? Sy now gets raves
that once she des-per-ately craved
“Can’t sing or emote”, they once wrote of you
But oh, how many now wanted you through
And so, Syesha, it’s Broadway night
We see in you that genre, right?
We’ll see you on the NY stage
And I will crow “See! All the rage!”
--Guess Who?
By RedRocket , Posted May 15, 2008 11:07 AMRedRocket, I think you should've submitted a coronation song for this season. You have a talent!
By EOC , Posted May 15, 2008 12:05 PMI only have a few comments. I was very impressed with the way syesha accepted the decision. Very professional, unlike Brooke who was a crying idiot.
By shelbarr , Posted May 15, 2008 12:23 PMI wonder if all the publicity about david d dad getting banned from backstage at idol is a ploy to get the sympathy card for little david..the big bad ogre dad and poor little david d scared to death of him.
I do have to comment on simons expression when fantasia was singing...absoultely priceless...the best of all season.
David cook still has my vote.
I really hope Archuletta wins. Cook is so annoying with his arrogance and irritating habit of blowing air out through his cheeks.
What I thought was interesting was Syesha's background- a father who battled addictions- but she handled everything with such class. She was a true talent and I hope to see a lot more of her classy, beautiful face!
I am a huge Fantasia fan but I totally agree with the comments about that performance- I had the same look on my face as Simon! haha.
GO ARCHULETTA!!!
By Lindsey , Posted May 15, 2008 12:31 PMI really hope Archuletta wins. Cook is so annoying with his arrogance and irritating habit of blowing air out through his cheeks.
Loved seeing and hearing about Syesha's background- a father who battled addictions- but she handled everything with such class. She was a true talent and I hope to see a lot more of her classy, beautiful face!

By Lindsey , Posted May 15, 2008 12:33 PMOne would need to live in a cave
By Nancy , Posted May 15, 2008 12:40 PMNot to know the winner will be Dave
But David A or David C?
How many texters will their B?
I think I will guess tween love A will win out
If my C just comes close I promise not to pout
Thursday RedRocket with no Syesha to poetically praise
Brings to a sad ending our Express idol days!
Last night, on the news, they had a short feature on Blake Lewis who revealed that he had asked to change the AI winning song from last season to suit his style, but that the producers put their feet down and said no. He claims that might've been the reason why he lost to Jordin Sparks. ...Wonder if David Cook will put up a fight just so he could inject his own flavor to a crappy finale song?! ...By the way, David Cook endeared himself to me when he said that with all the things happening to him (AI), there must therefore be something bigger working behind the scenes. He sometimes comes across as arrogant, but that was a humble statement attesting to the fact that he isn't so self-centered at all. I think he sometimes act the way he does to come out looking uber-cool! He actually is, more so now that I've seen another side of him. I hope he brings home the prize. If not, I hope he ends up (kinda) like Clay -- the best non-winner there is!
By shin goon , Posted May 15, 2008 12:54 PMOde to Redrocket and Syesha
By a friend , Posted May 15, 2008 1:34 PMWe humbly attest, Sy grew on us
But David-itis was just "two" much
The judges (however cruel they be)
just couldn't praise, just couldn't see
That Sy was gifted in her class
(and didn't hurt,she had a nice ***)
but voters were con-sis-tent-ly
vo-ting her in-to B3
and so, redrocket, your gal is done
Her time has come. She won't be the 1
Except of course, for Broadway shows
for which her talent surely knows
we admire you, rocket, you stayed the course
and praised your gal through good and worse
Sorry 'bout the chintzy rhymes
but I only get 30-minutes lunchtime!
Shin Goon, I saw the interview with Blake, and I hope Cook does put his foot down and refuse to sing the cheesy finale song, which, to up the cheese factor by 20, was written by an amateur contest winner and voted on by America. Hickory Farms, anyone? Sorry, but that is not the way to provide the song that launches a career. As big as Idol has gotten, they should now be able to commission a song from a top songwriter, like Neil Diamond, Burt Bacharach, or even Usher.
I am SO happy for the Battle of the Davids!!!! This is going to be so exciting!!! It will also be the first two-guy finale since Clay vs. Ruben. Fun Fact: there has never been a guy-guy finale at the Kodak Theater.
Syesha went out with grace and style, and her parents were proud and happy. She really is a class act.
If Fantasia sang like that at her Season 3 audition, she wouldn't have even made it to Hollywood, much less won the crown. Simon's face was priceless, and he spoke for all of us without saying a word. That was one of the best moments of the whole season. Don't blame me, I voted for Diana.
By Barnsinger , Posted May 15, 2008 4:39 PMIt took a day to get over my fantasiatic flu, but I'm feeling better now. Simon's face was hysterical. I actually thought she was entertaining even though the only words I understood the whole "song" was, "Come on now."
I sure was nervous until David Cook was tossed into the final. He deserves it. So many people call him arrogant, but three things showed his character: 1. His devotion to his sick brother. 2. His statement that not wanting to win would be an insult to all who tried out for the show and, 3. The flowers he brought his music teacher. What a nice thing to do!
David A., will win, putting him in as a two album artist. We will all wait in anticipation for the smarmy Christmas album won't we?
Syesha was classy and did a good job. She should be proud of herself.
As per the comment earlier about her African-American heritage, well, the census records still show more whites in this country than otherwise. That is a natural barrier on a voting show that is difficult to overcome unless the talent is a once-in-a-lifetime type. But Reuben and Fantatia and Jordan all won, so the show has been fair to the minority.
Dave versus David. It will be interesting.
Thanks, Greg, as always. Enjoyed the post.
By William , Posted May 15, 2008 4:50 PMOk, David A didn't do much for me personally. His cheesy smile was on constantly, every song sounded exactly the same, (except "Imagine). Very predictable, Syesha impressed me more the last night by NOT falling apart.. and frankly, David Cook was a shue in for me, from week one. All have a great chance of doing something great with their careers, with Idol you don't have to win to be successful.
By Carol , Posted May 15, 2008 5:59 PMI've liked David Archuleta from the beginning of the Top 24. He's still my pick. Cook may win and more power to him, but he's not the best vocalist of the two.
This was the first vocal I've heard by Fantasia that I liked. Don't care if her hair was green, she put on a good performance.
