Photo by Doug Coombe AFRO-BEAT MUSIC began in Nigeria in the 1970s, and, due to favorable trade winds, peace treaties and a little luck, it has now made its way to Ann Arbor, Mich., where it inspired the members of Nomo to play music.

And, boy, are they good at it.

Bonus points: Frontman Elliot Bergman makes unique percussion instruments from recycling center detritus.
