I Stop Somewhere, Waiting for You: 'Swift to My Wounded'
WASHINGTON HAS been running a stealthy and underhanded campaign in which we attempt to pilfer the legacy of Walt Whitman from New York. OK, so D.C. has a valid claim — he lived here for a long time and he worked for the government. He's been called the "Poet of Democracy" (like Donald Rumsfeld!) — so of course we want to co-opt him.
Anyway, Bill Largess has put together a one-man show in Whitman's own words, "Swift to My Wounded," and it's free at the National Theatre tonight.
So head down there to learn more about Whitman, or just to make a lot of tasteless jokes along the lines of "I swifted to your MOM's wounded." Hey, that's where my mind went, too. No judgment.
