It was a Dark and Stormy Night: 'A History of Dogs and Witches'
IT'S A LITTLE dark, a little strange, but Laurel Hausler's solo exhibition, "A History of Dogs and Witches," is an absolutely compelling artistic vision and a far more interesting way to ready for Halloween than your typical buying-candy-corn-and-sexy-witch-costumes binge. Though you should absolutely stock up on candy corn, if only to prepare for the long, cold winter that's coming.
The exhibit takes a sometimes-touchy subject and makes no attempt to touch on the ideological extremes surrounding witches. These aren't Pacific Northwest Wiccans and they're not any kind of demons — they're just dark, haunting portraits of women engaging in stereotypical witchly activities. It's Halloween pastiche and it pushes few boundaries, but it probably won't get picketed either so that's a plus.
