A Lion's Pride: Jon Meacham on Andrew Jackson
WEDNESDAY: History has a complicated relationship with Andrew Jackson. To some, he's Old Hickory, the man of the people who tangled with the fat cats at the national bank and won; the president who through gritted teeth practically willed the Union to stay together through the nullification crisis.
To others, he's the power behind the Trail of Tears — a forced relocation of Native Americans in which thousands died and many thousands more lost a time-honored connection to their tribal lands.
That complex character was Newsweek editor Jon Meacham's quarry in his new book, "American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House." Meacham brings himself and Jackson's story to Politics & Prose.
