A Morbid Preoccupation: 'Special Dead'

Photo courtesy Walters Art Museum THIS WEEK: Ever wonder where saints go when they die? Here's the literal answer: they go into these little mini-houses called reliquaries.

Reliquaries were used to transport and showcase relics of saints — remains, clothes or what have you. The reliquary pictured here is the final resting place of Saint Amandus, who converted a big chunk of France and Belgium to Christianity, and the Walters Art Museum has the only such reliquary in the U.S.

This artifact is a toe in the water for a much larger exhibit the Walters plans to roll out in 2011 all about medieval Christian relics.
