Bird Is the Word: Celebrate National Bird Day

Photo by Melina Mara/The Washington Post
MONDAY: Fess up. The last time you paid a lot of attention to a bird was when you stuffed yourself silly with turkey over the holidays. (Groan.)

Is that stomach still stretched out? Give yourself a break and pay homage to our feathered friends on Monday, which is National Bird Day.

Sure, you could be lazy and sit on a Tidal Basin bench, chucking birdseed at tourists. Or you could check out the D.C. Audubon Society's Web site for a rundown of beak buddies to keep an eye out for (there's even a guide to bird watching via Metro stops).

Once you're pooped from peeping, reward yourself by dining at Soul Vegetarian or Nirvana -- two non-bird serving, vegetarian restaurants, of course.

» Soul Vegetarian Cafe606 Georgia Ave. NW, 202-328-7685.
» Nirvana, 1810 K St. NW, 202-223-5043 (Farragut North, Farragut West)
