Pyschobilly Killer Kool: Koffin Kats

Photo courtesy Koffin KatsTUESDAY: There are three good reasons to respect the Koffin Kats: 1) They've got a cool name (that they spell even kooler). 2) In these days of iPhone gloating, they still release recordings on vinyl. 3) They've got a raucous lead singer in Vic Victor whose energy is so innately raw and frenetic, he unleashes it on an instrument sturdy enough to handle it: a double bass. That this punk and psychobilly Detroit crew cranks out decent tuneage is just a bonus.

With influences from the likes of Motley Crue and Bad Religion, the Kats' DC9 gig is not for folks seeking a mellow night out. For those who'd prefer a mishmash of Rancid/Henry Rollins/Stray Cats, though, it's time for you to motivate.

» DC9, , 1940 9th St. NW; with The Goddamn Gallows, Tue., Jan. 6, 9 p.m., $8, 202-483-5000. (U St.-Cardozo)
