Love, Screwball Style: 'Nothing Sacred'

Carole Lombard photo from Life Magazine MONDAY: Movies from the 1930s weren't all fluffy musicals. This era pioneered the dark comedy on film, and one of the prime examples is "Nothing Sacred," the story of a girl who's dying — maybe.

AFI is hosting a series of movies in tribute to star Carole Lombard, and this is one of her best.

Catch it tonight or at the repeat on Wednesday — or check out one of her other films. We like "To Be or Not To Be," about a Jewish theater company in Europe during World War II. It's a comedy! Really!

» AFI Silver Theatre, 8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring; Mon. and Wed., Feb. 16 and 18, 7:15 p.m., $7.50; 301-495-6720. (Silver Spring)
