GOLD'S CHALLENGE

In Basic Strength Training

JennyMeaghan.jpgFor 12 weeks, 6 Express readers are competing for $5,000 and a one-year membership to Gold’s Gym. Challengers are racking up points for losing unwanted weight and winning fitness challenges. The challenger with the most points at the end of 12 weeks wins.
Gold’s Gym personal trainers develop customized workouts for each challenger. We talked with Greg, Meaghan, and their Gold’s personal trainers about strength training and why it’s such an effective - and important - part of their workouts.

Save Time With Multi-Muscle Movements
Meaghan's big goal is to fit into her mother's wedding dress. She had a number of sizes to lose, so she and her personal trainer, Jenny, have focused on maximizing time and working the entire body. For strength training, Jenny encouraged circuit training with high reps and low weight to help Meaghan increase her muscular endurance. Meaghan is more motivated than ever, and she should be - she's taken the lead and has lost over 3 pounds this week!
Jenny's Trainer Tip: Focus on multiple-muscle movements, which help maximize time and burn fat more efficiently.

Build Benefits With Progressive Loads
MichaelGreg.jpgGreg’s working to make himself a fitter father, and he’s been learning a lot about strength training, cardio and nutrition.
His personal trainer, Michael, has Greg focusing on building his functional strength with exercises like push-ups, pull-ups and dips. In addition, Greg is building his core strength with lower back and abdominal exercises in every workout. He’s been very happy with the results: he’s lost a total of 16 pounds.
Michael’s Trainer Tip: Progressive loads - gradually increasing the amount of weight you are lifting - help increase toning, encourage fat loss, build strength and bone density.

Points are awarded weekly for weight loss and competitive challenges. In the event of no weight loss, or a less than 1% weight gain, contestants receive 0 points. Over 1% weight gain, contestants lose points proportional to their percentage of weight gain.

  • Larry - keep up the good work! You are really sticking to your nutritional plan - I watched how everyone else dined on fried chicken, sauteed meatballs and pasta salad this past weekend and all you ate was fruit!! That's truly commendable and it's already paying off! Push it to the limit;)

  • Congrad to all . Hey Meagan and Jenny. You both are truly becoming a team. Keep up the hard work. The payoff is gr8 not just winning this competion but your future in making sure you set time aside for you. Go get them team. Just a question to the Golds Gym that Jenny is a personal trainer at. Why is it that you have no MEET THE TRAINERS in your internet advertisment? Don't you think you should be working on that for Business, improving that personal touch for future clients ?
