Best Gym: Washington Sports Clubs

Best Gym, Washington Sports Clubs
BACK BEFORE HE HAD the White House gym at his disposal, Barack Obama used to sweat it out at Washington Sports Clubs. So it's no surprise that the chain with 19 area locations would win over the rest of the city's residents. There's a "Yes, we can" philosophy about the clubs, thanks to the fact that a trainer's always on hand to answer questions and help plan programs. Plus, beyond top-of-the-line cardio equipment and weights, several of the clubs offer additional amenities including pools, basketball courts and even a Turkish-style bath.

You Probably Didn't Know: WSC's Glover Park location is the only health club in the city that's open 24 hours a day.

  • It is hard to see how the Washington Sports Club chain can be considered the best gym in D.C. under any standard. The company focuses on selling memberships, and shows very little concern for existing members. The clubs were nice when they opened, but they have become outdated and have shown very little in the way of improvement. By way of contrast, the New York Sports Clubs, another unit of the same company, are much more dynamic, with that unit of the company opening up clubs with facilities that go way beyond the D.C. clubs---including basketball courts, squash courts, pools, etc. Sports Club/LA is far nicer in D.C., although not conveniently located. Several chains in the D.C. area appear to be more focused on the quality of their facilities and with improving over time, such as the giant gym adjacent to the Verizon Center. There are also semi-private facilities in the District that far exceed the Washington Sports Club, such as the Georgetown Law athletic center. Washington Sports Club needs to return to its roots and focus on the quality of its members' experiences. The D.C. clubs presently use cheap and outdated real estate to sell memberships based on the strength of the New York brand.

  • Ummmmmm.... Georgetown Law is managed by the WSC people.
If Sports Clubs, LA is so great, why are so many of the people who work in that building coming to WSC to work out instead?

  • If you are looking for a "club" there is no doubt that Sports Club/LA is the best. In terms of services, which the term "club" implies, it is second to none. But this award was for the city's best gym. A gym is a place people go to workout- not to get facials. If you're looking for the best gym, it is Vida Fitness hands down. I am not related to any of these facilities in any way other than that I have been a member of nearly every gym or club in D.C. over the years. Vida clearly outshines the rest in terms of value, quality of facilities, equipment and classes.
