Upgraded Taps: Beer Week at Ventnor Sports Cafe, New Cocktails at Cafe Atlantico

Drinks at Cafe Atlantico Don't get me wrong, I love dark sports bars with objectively unappetizing beer on tap, but it's nice to see the Ventnor Sports Cafe (2411 18th St. NW) tarting itself up for an event with the imaginative name "Beer Week."

The taps that have been home to Miller Lite will glow anew with American craft beers. Bell's and Dogfishhead beers will spew forth like the fountain of youth and the rejoicing masses will pay $4 for each beer and $12 for each pitcher through Aug. 1. And Thor will probably show up with his glowing hammer and shield of righteousness and I have GOT to stop reading Norse mythology before writing this.

Of course, if Yuengling is your thing, you can just wait a week and Ventnor will be back to normal. Well, not quite: On Aug. 2 Barbecue Week begins, with a $19 all-you-can-eat deal on smoked meaty goodness.

A Drinkable Feast
Not quite in time for Ernest Hemingway's birthday last week, Cafe Atlantico (405 8th St. NW) has introduced a new cocktail menu. The list includes not only twists on the Nobel winner's favorite drinks, like the mojito and the pisco sour, but also something called the Old Man and the Sea, which involves hibiscus infused rum and lime juice.

We're not sure what that has to do with old men or the sea, and we ARE sure that Hemingway would have punched anyone who gave him hisbiscus-infused rum, but it sounds pretty delicious to us.
