AFTER A DEER APPEARED in the Red Line tunnels and on the platform at the Wheaton station on Sunday, causing big delays, one big question remains: How exactly did it make its way into a section of tunnel that boasts Metrorail's deepest station (Forest Glen) and the longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere (Wheaton)?

Courtesy WMATAAs The Post's Lena H. Sun noted in Monday's Roads and Rails discussion on washingtonpost.com, there is still some mystery surrounding the deer, which Metro Transit Police officers had to shoot before service could get back to normal:

Metro officials aren't sure how the animal got there, but suspect it might have entered the system at one of the above-ground stations and then made its way to the Wheaton station.
This isn't the first time Metro has had intrusions from deer. Pictured here is a camera image of a deer bounding down the platform at the Addison Road-Seat Pleasant station on the Blue Line sometime in late 2003.

ScreengrabTRAVELING ON the Red, Blue, Yellow or Green lines this weekend? Be prepared for delays due to scheduled track maintenance and rail car testing.

Riders traveling on the Blue and Yellow lines to and from Reagan National Airport and Alexandria will experience major delays of up to 30 minutes between the Pentagon City and Braddock Road stations because of track maintenance. Trains between those stations will share a track from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Alternating Blue Line trains traveling to Franconia-Springfield station will terminate at Pentagon City and return to Largo Town Center, and alternating Yellow Line trains traveling to Huntington will terminate at Pentagon City and return to Fort Totten. Those traveling south of Pentagon City should plan accordingly, and build extra time into their schedules.

Those heading through Bethesda on the Red Line can expect 15 minute delays between the Friendship Heights and Medical Center stations due to track maintenance. Trains between those stations will share a track starting around 10 p.m. today through 10 a.m. Saturday, and again from 10 p.m. Saturday until 10 a.m. Sunday.

Riders on the Blue Line between the District and Prince George's County may face 15 minute delays between the Stadium Armory and Addison Road-Seat Pleasant stations for track maintenance. Trains between those stations will share the same track starting today at 10 p.m. until 10 a.m. Saturday, and from 10 p.m. Saturday until 10 a.m. Sunday.

Those traveling on the Green Line in Southeast D.C. between Navy Yard and Southern Avenue stations should add 20 minutes to trips for scheduled track maintenance. Trains between those stations will share one track from 7 a.m. to midnight on Sunday.

Also on the Green Line in Prince George's County, riders should expect 10-15 minute delays between the Greenbelt and College Park stations for regular rail car testing. Trains will share a track during testing, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

SINCE IT'S FRIDAY, it's time to preview Metrorail track maintenance for you weekend transit warriors. In the Metrorail system core, don't expect any scheduled major hassles, but if you ride the Red, Blue or Green lines out in more suburban areas, listen up.

Starting later today at 10 p.m and lasting through Sunday closing, Red Line trains will share the same track between the Twinbrook and Grosvenor-Strathmore stations. So add 20 minutes of travel time through Rockville Pike corridor. Also, at the Grosvenor-Strathmore station, escalator canopy construction will close the Rockville Pike pedestrian access tunnel on Saturday.

For the last two hours of operation on Sunday, Blue Line trains will share the same track between the Stadium-Armory station in the District and the Addison Road-Seat Pleasant station in Prince George's County. Add 10 minutes of travel time through that area.

And Green Line riders out near the College Park-U of Md. station and the Greenbelt terminus should expect 10 minute delays on Saturday and Sunday from opening to 4 p.m. for, you guessed it, the testing of new rail cars -- a recurring theme for this section of the Metrorail system.
