ON OCT. 18, ALIYA ALTAFULLAH and Justin Rinaldi, both 24, had the fusion wedding of their dreams. In a formal nikkah ceremony in front of 260 guests at the Westfields Marriott hotel in Chantilly, the bride and groom celebrated their union. Aliya wore a handmade gold lehnga that she designed with her mother, and walked down the aisle to traditional Indian sitar music. The bridesmaids wore purple lehngas with gold embossing. Western elements were also incorporated into the celebration, including a ring exchange and a bridal party.

They've been together since they were freshmen at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. After meeting in a public speaking class, they realized that they had grown up in Northern Virginia, attended rival high schools and even had mutual friends.

For their honeymoon, the newlyweds went on a cruise through Italy, Greece and Turkey. Justin is a business analyst for Mobile Satellite Ventures, and Aliya is a producer for the Discovery Channel. They live in Arlington.

WHEN HIGH SCHOOL teacher STEPHANIE LEE, 24, introduced herself to accountant JOHN RIZAS, 25, on the plane ride to Europe on a University of Maryland alumni tour in 2005, she remembers him not being very talkative, although John claims he was just tired. When John asked Stephanie to take a picture of him with another girl at a London pub a few days later, Stephanie decided to give up. But John had different plans. "I was just looking for excuses to talk to her," he says. The two had their first date in Munich, Germany, where they ate dinner at the Hofbrauhaus and danced the night away. John says, "It took until we reached Austria for us to really get to know one another, and we've been together ever since!" He says he knew he wanted to marry Stephanie by the last country on the tour — Greece. Stephanie, on the other hand, says it took her a little longer. "I needed to make sure he was as charming in the U.S. as he had been in Europe."

The couple will be married on Jan. 1 in Naples, Fla.

» The Main Event: Rabbi Jeffrey Wohlberg will officiate a ceremony on Jan. 10 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in D.C. The couple plan to incorporate a number of Russian customs.

» First Impressions: "I heard that he was a playboy and would never leave his then-girlfriend." "She was very pretty, but I was dating someone else."

» Most Hated Clothing Item: "I could die a happy man if she burned every piece of clothing she still wears that she had in middle school. Shouldn't clothing have an expiration date? I like to wear ties at home. Needless to say, we have differing styles."

» How He Proposed: "We got up early to go biking in Rock Creek Park. We got out to the rocks by the Park Police station near Military Road, where the creek bends sharply and the sun hits the water in an amazing sparkle in the morning.
WHEN FRITZ CHALEFF, 34, communications director for Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa, made up his mind to propose to Annual Giving Manager for Defenders of Wildlife MOLLY FARRELL, 33, he decided to take advantage of his Capitol connections and stage a unique D.C. proposal. He arranged to have his boss take them on a private tour of the Capitol. Fritz says, "As we went through the Rotunda, he steered us toward the Speaker's Office, and toward the Speaker's balcony. Once there, we were able to see the National Museum of the American Indian, where we met, and while she was looking at the museum, that's when I got down on one knee. Molly said yes, and Congressman Latham took the first picture."

On Nov. 8, the couple will be married at St. Clement's, Molly's childhood church, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The same priest who married Fritz's brother and his wife will officiate. The new couple will host their reception at the National Museum of Racing. If the bride had her way, she teases, the groomsmen would wear custom jockey silks.
